the sunny morning contrasted the cool air in tana toa area, south sulawesi, where the kajang dalam and kajang luar communities were about to begin the andingingi ceremony a rite to cool the whole nature and its contents apply for safety.
before starting the ceremony, the people of kajang gathered rigth at the entrance of the customary land of kajang. looking like a fence, men and women mingled to form ranks and march. they formed a 10 meter line from the gate. after the highly anticipated guest arrives, they walked toward the ceremony venue, about 200 meter away, guest dressed in black mingled. the black color is believed by the kajang tribe to be the perfect color that symbolizes the simplicity. however the differences is still visible unlike visitors, the native kajang people do not use foot wears.
soon we arived at the location of the andingingi ceremony. two barung-barung or hut were built on the left side of the road. one barung-barung was used for guests from the outside while the other was occupied by the native kajang people;including the tribe leader of ammatoa. the barung-barung was relatively low compared to the size of a normal barung-barung.
the people of kajang, especialy the ones living in the area of kajang dalam or in tana toa have a simple natural way of living. they use equipments made from materials from the nature such as the tide -plates from woven leaves. coconut shells are divided into two parts and used as bowls; cups are made of segmented bamboos. for fighting, the people of kajang make use of mashed candleberry nuts, then mixed with cotton and wrapped in bamboo which are shaped to be flat.
in the barung-barung the ammatoa has already seated, accompanied by the empress and officials of the kajang tribe. leaders and people sat together under the same roof, the difference is the seating place of the ammatoa is more lenient. right in the middle, lies the props of the ceremony. they include holy water thet has already been cooled overnight ( known as the appalentenge ere), large bundle of herbs consisting of 40 species known as the raung kayu patang pulo, and a set of kapur sirih in woven palm leaves trays. the props of this ceremony were guarded by the wife of the ammatoa and her trusted two female consorts, haniah and minasa.
the three female guard of the ceremonial props were busy making potions. haniah was making some kind of powder. her handss were busy mixing some leaves thet contain refined flour with saffrons rice. the materials were then inserted into the sai (coconut shell bowl) and then given a bit of holy water. the unique scented wet powder was then used for bacca ( the marker on the forehead and bases of the neck of all the people who participated in the andingingi ritual). the usage of bacca has a meaning so that all who attended the ceremony will be honest to themselves and others, by unifying what is thought with the heart's content.
after the powder making process was completed, two men, known as tu'nete conduced the abbebese. this is the procession to pour water into the four corners of wind by going around all those present for three times. one man was in charge in carrying the katoang or basin made from soil contenting holy water. the other was assigned to conduct kebasan with 40 types of leaves tied together. earlier, the leaves had been soaked overnigth along with holy water.
the leader of kajang luar community, tamrin rais, 34, said abbese is the core activity of the andingingi ritual. kebasan to the four corners of the wind and around all those present are intended to be cool the safety, serenity and peace. the use od a large bundle of leaves means that man as God's creatures are very dependent on nature; therefore they have to preserve the nature. nature and humans should be friends and look after each aother. " each and every splash of the water is expected to cool the whole nature," said tamrin.
the kinds of leaves used for abbese are typical plants. all of the plasma grow in the regions of tana toa.among them are tobi- young coconut, biruppa, paliasa, koddoro buku, and some leaves which are commonly used as medicine. other equipments that are also required in the andingingi ritual is the sikarrang loka - a bundle of rice grain and loka katiung- banana.
